Shining Star

Lois Gordon is having a ball writing for Theatre Ancaster’s Classics Play Company.

“It’s very exciting,” said Ms Gordon, who has been writing stories since grade two. “Even as a kid, I loved getting a gold star and having my story on the cork board for parents’ night.” Ms Gordon became involved with Theatre Ancaster in 2019 when she helped polish a script being written by the ensemble cast of Stranded..

“We needed help,” director Gord Conroy added, “and Lois was the answer. We couldn’t bear to part with some of our scenes and the play was getting bogged down.”

’You’ve got to kill your darlings,” laughed Ms. Gordon. “Dialogue has to say so much with few words.” Lois Gordon should know. She’s an editor as well as writer so she knows how hard it is to cut. She is also an interior designer and that experience has provided her with knowledge of thousands of people for her characters and a sense of how to write and use space dramatically on the stage.

Spirited! which debuts February 29, 2024, is a heart-warming, friends-forever comedy that touches on well-being, aging, and the special relationships that women have. And, for good measure, it shares a secret for true happiness! And a ghost!

“Writing a play is very different. You live and die with dialogue in a play. You can’t describe emotions, settings, feelings the way you can in a novel. You really have to show, not tell. It’s a great challenge. I love it.”
